Le ministre des Affaires étrangères, l’honorable Lawrence Cannon, a fait aujourd’hui la déclaration suivante au sujet de l’annonce faite par le gouvernement américain quant aux mesures qu’il entend prendre pour renforcer son engagement en Afghanistan, y compris par le déploiement de ressources militaires et civiles additionnelles.
« Le Canada est heureux d’apprendre que les États-Unis déploieront des ressources militaires et civiles supplémentaires en Afghanistan, en particulier dans le sud du pays. Ces ressources additionnelles vont aider à améliorer les conditions de sécurité dans lesquelles vit la population afghane.

Le Premier ministre Stephen Harper a annoncé aujourd’hui que le Canada et l’Inde avaient conclu les négociations en vue d’un accord de coopération nucléaire. Le Premier ministre en a fait l’annonce à l’occasion d’une rencontre avec Dr Manmohan Singh, premier ministre de l’Inde, tenue en marge de la Réunion de 2009 des chefs de gouvernement des pays du Commonwealth.

Le Premier ministre Stephen Harper a fait la déclaration suivante à la clôture de la Réunion des chefs des pays membres du Commonwealth tenue à Port of Spain, à Trinité-et-Tobago :
« Ce fut un plaisir de me joindre à Sa Majesté La Reine Elizabeth II, leader du Commonwealth, et aux autres chefs des pays membres du Commonwealth, afin de marquer le 60e anniversaire de cette institution mondiale de premier plan. J’aimerais féliciter l’honorable Patrick Manning, le Premier ministre de Trinité-et-Tobago, pour la généreuse hospitalité de son pays.

Canadian command in Afghanistan grows with addition of U.S. troops

A crack U.S. unit from the 82nd Airborne Division has been placed under Canadian command in order to "create a ring of stability" around Kandahar City before "the fighting season" kicks off again next May.
The 2nd battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division is to be deployed in the Taliban-infested district of Arghandab by Christmas, Canadian Brig.-Gen. Daniel Menard confirmed Wednesday.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper to talk human rights, fiscal policy in China visit

Prime Minister Stephen Harper will meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao, visit the Great Wall of China, and honour Canadian soldiers killed in Hong Kong during the Second World War as part his first trip to China.
In the last month, Harper has visited India, Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago and, on Tuesday, will depart for China, where he'll touch down in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. He will also visit South Korea while he's in the region Dec. 2 – Dec. 7 and become the first Canadian prime minister to address the South Korean national assembly.

Rogers launches Hulu clone

Rogers is taking a page from Hulu, the popular U.S. video portal, with the launch of its own — albeit limited — online hub for television and movies.
The cable and wireless company on Monday opened up to the public the beta version of its Rogers On Demand Online website, which lets users watch full episodes of television shows, movies and other short clips. The site launched with 1,500 videos from 15 partners including Teletoon and Super Channel, and plans to add new partners and content frequently.

An anti-gay bill in Uganda that proposes the death penalty and long prison sentences for homosexual acts is deplorable, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Sunday.
Harper told reporters he met privately with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni during the Commonwealth leaders' summit to express "Canada's deep concern and strong opposition to the bill."

Brodeur, the odds-on favourite to again be Canada's starting goalie at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, passed his citizenship test early Tuesday morning in Newark, then walked across the street to the Prudential Center and joined the New Jersey Devils at their practice.

Shares of several of Canada's largest lumber exporters have skyrocketed in the past two months as new building codes in China allowing wood in construction have cracked open a previously inaccessible market for Canada's long-suffering forestry industry.
Since Oct. 1, shares in International Forest Products Ltd. have soared 58.3%, while Canfor Corp. and West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. shares jumped 31.4% and 28.4%, respectively.

Recession-weary manufacturers in Manitoba have been getting a shot in the arm from an unlikely source — the federal home renovation tax credit program, which is bolstering sales and saving jobs.
The chief executive of Acrylon Plastics, which manufactures PVC window frames, said the home renovation tax credit (HRTC) program has sent window-frame sales into record-setting territory for the Winnipeg company.

Vietnamese port to sign trade agreement with Halifax

The Port of Halifax will reinforce the importance of developing trade with Vietnam when it signs a memorandum of understanding with the Port of Haiphong next week.
A formal signing ceremony is planned for Wednesday as part of a trade mission to that country. The mission gets underway Sunday and will include business and university officials from Atlantic Canada.

Grey Cup put $50M into Calgary economy

Calgary's Grey Cup weekend was a major boost for the city's economy as football fans filled downtown hotels, restaurants and bars over the past few days.
Although the full impact won't be known for at least a month, officials estimate the Grey Cup attracted up to 20,000 visitors and will bring in about $50 million in financial spinoffs to the city.
"It has a great economic impact," Mayor Dave Bronconnier said Monday. "The tourism industry could certainly use a shot in the arm and this one gave it."

Song Xin, the new CEO of Vancouver-based, TSX-listed Jinshan Gold Mines, recently made his first trip from his base in Beijing to essentially say, “Hello, Vancouver.”
In May 2008, his company, China National Gold Corp., a Chinese state-owned enterprise and the largest gold producer in China, became Jinshan’s largest shareholder, replacing Ivanhoe Mines by buying its 42-per-cent stake in Jinshan for $217 million.

Tous les ingrédients étaient réunis pour un défilé presque parfait dans les rues du centre-ville, hier midi. Il y avait la Coupe Grey. Il y avait les joueurs des Alouettes. Il y avait les milliers de partisans. Et enfin, il y avait un maire que les fans ont eu bien du plaisir à huer.
Mémorable? C'était en tout cas l'opinion des joueurs des Alouettes, qui ont presque tous utilisé ce mot pour décrire le défilé de la conquête de la Coupe Grey, présenté hier. Les fans montréalais, encore en proie à l'euphorie de la victoire, dimanche à Calgary, ont répondu avec enthousiasme.

Vaccination : 7 millions pour convaincre les Québécois

Le gouvernement du Québec a dépensé plus de 7,2 millions à ce jour, uniquement dans le but de convaincre les Québécois de se faire vacciner contre la grippe A (H1N1).
Selon des documents obtenus par La Presse grâce à la Loi d'accès à l'information, plus de 5,4 millions ont déjà été engagés à ce jour pour la campagne de vaccination et la production d'un guide d'information destiné aux familles. Des dépenses supplémentaires de 1,8 million sont aussi prévues.

La ville de Granby a reçu un important coup de pouce hier pour le remplacement d'infrastructures liées à l'eau dans le secteur de la rue Robitaille. Les gouvernements fédéral et provincial ont annoncé hier une aide financière conjointe de 3,2 millions $ pour un projet global de 5,2 millions $.
Le ministre du Commerce international et ministre de la porte d'entrée de l'Asie-Pacifique, Stockwell Day, et la députée de Soulanges et whip adjointe du gouvernement du Québec, Lucie Charlebois, étaient de passage à l'hôtel de ville de Granby pour l'occasion.

Google Street View launched its street-level pictures of Winnipeg late Tuesday, meaning Internet users can call up pictures of most Winnipeg locations as they appeared last winter/spring. A Google truck with a specialized camera on top toured Winnipeg for six months and photographed every visible street.

Harris's 'Stump' painting sells at auction for $3M record

An iconic Lawren Harris landscape featuring a lonely tree stump on the shore of Lake Superior sold at auction yesterday for a record $3-million. Two other paintings by the Group of Seven founder also topped $1-million.
But the top bid for The Old Stump, Lake Superior, pictured, was the highest price yet paid for a Harris painting or for any artwork by a member of the famed Group of Seven. "The tree is alone, rarified and dignified," the Heffel Fine Art auction catalogue says.

The baby beluga at the Vancouver Aquarium has been christened Nala — short for Nalautsaagaq, meaning surprise in Inuit.
The winning moniker, suggested by the Joyce family of Burnaby, beat out 3,000 entries from across the country. Other top names included Sila, Kuvi, Nalli and Uumamarik.
Katie Joyce said the family suggested the name “because Nala is a surprise gift for everyone who visits the Vancouver Aquarium to be able to see and learn about these amazing animals”.

But as World AIDS Day comes to its inevitable end, the issue of HIV and AIDS and the struggles these countries face will fall to the wayside for many Canadians, becoming a distant memory until the next World AIDS Day comes around.
