Les diplomates canadiens de haut rang au États-Unis ont rencontré 75 membres du Congrès et leurs assistants afin de bien leur faire comprendre que les restrictions imposées par la clause Buy American de la Recovery Act occasionneront des pertes d’emploi des deux côtés de la frontière. Près de 30 chefs d’entreprise américains se sont joints à la délégation canadienne pour affirmer qu’en collaborant, nos deux pays arriveraient à relancer l’économie nord-américaine.

La crise économique mondiale actuelle, qui s’accompagne de rumeurs protectionnistes un peu partout dans le monde, a suscité la crainte d’une nouvelle vague de protectionnisme commercial. Selon un rapport du Bureau de l’économiste en chef du MAECI, le coût de telles politiques protectionnistes est plus élevé aujourd’hui qu’il ne l’était dans les années 1930.

David Alvarez, a 15-year-old classically trained ballet dancer from Montreal, won a Tony Award last night as the best actor in a musical for his role as the title character in Billy Elliot: The Musical, as the show took home 10 awards, including the evening's biggest honour, best musical. Mr. Alvarez shared the honour with two other teenagers with whom he alternates performances, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish.
