Wildfires in Southern California - Assistance for Canadians
The Connect2Canada Team
On October 23, Connect2Canada sent a message to C2C members in Southern California who may be affected by the wildfires. If you have any friends or family in the area, please let them know that the Canadian Consulate General in Los Angeles and the Canadian Consulate in San Diego continue to monitor the locations and conditions of all the fire sites in Southern California. Canadians are advised to consult local news reports and authorities for the latest information affecting their area. Canadians affected by the fires and requiring assistance may contact the Consulate General in Los Angeles at 213-346-2771 or the Emergency Operations Centre in Ottawa toll free at 1-888-949-9993.
Mark Messier Honoured at the Canadian Embassy

On October 24, Hockey Hall of Fame Inductee Mark Messier was honoured at an event hosted by Ambassador Michael Wilson. Recognized as one of hockey's greatest players, Mark is also considered one of the professional sporting world's greatest leaders on and off the ice. In his post-hockey career he is a strong advocate for preventive healthcare and a champion of research to combat childhood disease. Leaders in the worlds of politics, business and sport attended the event. Media representatives hailing from DC and NY and 11 Members of Congress also accepted the invitation. Coverage of this very special event was seen on TV and heard on radio. In his remarks, Mark said "I have represented my country at so many events over my career so it is a great honour for me and my entire family, especially my parents, to be here at our Embassy in Washington DC." It was a greater honour for the Canadian Embassy.

The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today fulfilled the Government’s commitment to reinstate two important, amended anti-terrorism measures in the Anti-Terrorism Act by tabling legislation in the Senate. The two amended measures – investigative hearing and the recognizance with conditions provisions in the Criminal Code – will assist the Government of Canada to meet the extraordinary challenges presented by terrorism.

The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health, the Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board, and the Honourable Christian Paradis, Secretary of State (Agriculture) today launched a user-friendly and centralized Web site database at www.healthycanadians.gc.ca/recalls which will allow Canadians to search recalled food and children's products that are unsafe or unhealthy.
