Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Formally Announces Trade Mission to Canada on "Canada Day in Sacramento"
The Connect2Canada Team
On March 19, 2007, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that he would lead a three-day trade mission to Canada in May 2007. The Governor made this announcement to coincide with the "Canada Day in Sacramento" organized by the Consulate General of Canada in San Francisco, in coordination with the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles.
The "Canada Day" was designed to highlight the importance of the Canada-California partnership. First, legislators, staff and the public were invited to visit our Canadian Pavilion, demonstrating the strong bonds both economically and in friendship between Canada and the Golden State. To coincide with Canada Day in Sacramento, the Consulate General of Canada in San Francisco coordinated the release of "Shared Values, Shared Vision California's Economic Ties with Canada" a comprehensive study produced by the Bay Area Economic Forum (BAEF) on the economic importance of the Canada-California partnership.
The study highlights the following key elements of the Canada-California partnership:
- Canada is the second largest customer for California's exports - behind Mexico, passing Japan this year (2006) for the number two position, and significantly ahead of China;
- Two-way trade with Canada supports an estimated 832,000 jobs in California;
- Canada is the number one foreign buyer of California agricultural products;
- Canada supplies 23% of California's natural gas and a third of its hydropower;
- In 2005, over 1 million Canadians visited California, spending an estimated $710 million in California's economy; and,
- From 2002-06, Silicon Valley venture capital (VC) firms invested more than $760 million in Canadian enterprises. Canadian VC firms returned the favour in Silicon Valley, in the amount of nearly $230 million during that same period.
